And this is why I want to live in the woods! There was a Washington hawthorn outside my Nana's bedroom window in the side yard of my childhood home. It's trunk was short and it had the most whimsical low hanging branches, so I could easily sit in it to read or have fun sketching it. But it was also a mentor, fashionista, and referee for all my races. I always loved looking at its white flowers and red berries from inside the house framed in the window as well as when I was outside.
Wow, so many memories are flooding back to me now about this tree and our adventures that were neatly folded up and tucked away in some brain memory bank. . .
Had to move back to Pennsylvania, it’s harder to think without the trees. The memories stay with them, like psyche storage units. Do you know if the Washington Hawthorn is still there? It makes so much sense for you.
I had two. There was a big evergreen in the backyard of my childhood home. The branches curved upward in a way that made part of it look to me like a phoenix spreading its wings, so it was "the phoenix tree." Then there was the pine at our cottage which was the biggest tree on the lake. It was like the north star if you were out on the water.
Glad you shared this, this is the important stuff.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. It relates to the reason I posted this! I almost titled it “My Jesus Trees” because of a very tall evergreen or pine in my front yard. I haven’t figured out which type it was. I just called it the Christmas tree. The dogwood was the Easter tree.
What a fascinating read and listen, and the visuals you create are such a prismatic scene. I love how you weave the story of the type of tree to a part of our souls, our own beings. There really is something about trees, specifically as creatures... I love that you get this!
This brought back such vivid memories for me of -- many trees actually :) -- but when I was very small, my first tree friend was the lilac which naturally split in half at the base and grew into two. My brother and I could slip through to get from our yard to our neighbors yard. And our next door neighbors were our grandparents! So it was very special indeed. And the scent of lilac always wraps around my little heart.
I'm smiling right now! :) Thank you, MK Ultra. What a treat!
Kindred spirit! Lilacs are my favorite flower. My mother has 3 lilac bushes. Actually, they might be big enough to be trees? They came from my grandparents garden, they’re the offspring of their lilacs. I never met my grandparents, so they are a lovely connection! I took photos of them last week, I’ll find a way to work them into a post.
WHAT! I love this connection in so many ways, Mary-Kate! We are so very kindred, isn't that wild.. and Oh aren't they truly the most beautiful flower, and bush, and tree.... the smell is heaven. Heaven! And I just love that you have photos of your dear lilacs.. I really hope you will share them with us!
My childhood home had a Japanese Maple out front that always felt special. Maybe because we were surrounded by pine trees and it stood out because it was red.
This post is one of the best things I’ve found on the internet in a very long time. Mine was a Cottonwood.
Cottonwood! You must be special. Now I have a goal to find one soon. Thank you for such kind words.
